Graduation with Leadership Distinction
Professional and Civic Engagement
ABOUT ME
In May of 2018, I will be graduating from the University of South Carolina with my Bachelor's of Music Degree with a concentration in Music Education. Within the School of Music and the band program, I have served in various leadership positions, performed in various high-caliber ensembles, and have gained quality training and experience as a future educator. My experiences and coursework have given me the opportunity to pursue Graduation with Leadership Distinction in the Professional and Civic Engagement pathway. This entire process has put into perspective how much I have grown. I had the opportunity to think back on my time here and make connections from within the classroom to beyond the classroom and can confidently say that my overall experience was fulfilling and overwhelmingly positive.
College is a time for growing, experiencing, and learning, and in my four years at Carolina, I have gone through astronomical personal growth. I came from the small town of Loris, SC and was suddenly thrown into this massive university. While the beginning was a rough transition, I soon discovered the passionate leader, teacher, and musician within myself and have accomplished things that I never would have imagined four or five years ago. This growth is attributed to my in-the-classroom and out-of-classroom experiences which taught me lessons vital to my growth: perspective in the hard times, battling my own biases, and leading by serving others. All of my coursework centralized around becoming an effective educator and an accomplished musician, and every extracurricular activity and service opportunity put all of my classroom learning and experiences into actions, making me a better teacher, leader, musician, and person.
Each key insight enclosed in this e-portfolio is a small piece of the puzzle that is my undergraduate experience. You will get to see a snapshot of important learning opportunities and leadership experiences as well as key ideals that have shaped who I am as a teacher. This was a series of internal revelations that came from coursework being applied in everyday life, and my goal is to take all that I have learned and reflected on and help make the lives' of my future students even better. I want to be a force for equitable education for all students no matter their background, upbringing, or disadvantages. Through each key insight, I come one step closer to my goal. Thank you for coming on this journey of growth with me, and I hope you can make connections and revelations as I have.
